Stephenson Square Design Competition
Colour participated in this design competition in 2016, developing proposals for the creation of a new public space centred on Stephenson’s Memorial – a key point of arrival within the City Centre, particularly from the train station.
Following a detailed site analysis, our proposal for the ‘Heart of the City’ was intended to tell the story of Newcastle, celebrating its past, present and future whilst providing flexible events space and a comfortable seating environment alongside one of the major roads through the City.
Components within the design were inspired by this theme including a feature sycamore tree marking the route of Hadrian’s Wall and mirroring Sycamore Gap, a plinth of coal (black granite) and fire (feature lighting) to Stephenson’s statue and wifi points to link into a City wide technology strategy.
