MEMORIAL FOR THE LOST TRAWLERMEN OF HULL

Colour were awarded this important project following a three-part international design competition attracting 79 entries in total. Our designs create a special place to collectively mark, honour and preserve the memory of the 6000 trawlermen lives lost over the last century many without any graves for their families to visit, honour and remember them by. The organising idea is to create a journey though the memorial grounds, and a progression of spaces which begins with enclosure and shelter in the arrival space and ends with the exposure to the sea and the elements. A large ceremonial space is designed for the capacity of commemorative events such as The Lost Trawlermen's Day. At the end of the journey and central to the ceremonial space is a sculpture the focus of loss in the memorial ground.   Colour are currently working with STAND, Hull City Council and the Environment Agency to integrate the memorial gardens with the proposed 28km River Humber Flood Defences.
