Kenton Bar Housing Estate
Designed by Ryder and Yates and constructed between 1966-68, the Kenton Bar estate is a rare example of post-war modernism and is the only substantial modernist housing estate within Newcastle.
Its original design intent and features have been lost over time or do not respond to current housing needs, and as a response to this Colour were commissioned in 2017 to carry out an analysis of the existing estate to inform the development of a transformational environmental improvement strategy.
Proposals seek to improve circulation throughout the estate, creating a hierarchy of footpaths and roads that provide clarity of movement and improved recreation.
New spaces for events and recreation were proposed in the heart of the site, and existing spaces between buildings were re-examined to give better defensible space and improved opportunities for residents to engage with each other outside, within communal gardens and new play/ exercise areas.
